Safety Program Overview

Annual Updates

  • CPR & SFA – training to re-certify once a year for CPR (which includes blood born pathogen training) and once every three years for SFA .
  • Safety luncheon / In-service day – devoted to updating the entire company on policy changes, new or amended safety information.
  • Audiometric testing – every company employee receives a hearing test.
  • Motor Vehicle Reports – every employee who drives a company vehicle has a search done on their driving record.
  • OSHA 300 log – recordable and non-recordable injuries
  • Flu shots – offered to the employees
  • Hazard Communication Standard – add new MSDS’s
  • Safety manual – add improvements or changes to manual
  • Competent person – refresher
  • Fire extinguishers – checked and certified by vendor
  • MSHA – 8 hour refresher

Quarterly / Monthly Updates

  • Assured equipment grounding program – a check of all cord sets and cap ends physical integrity and continuity in the ground leg
  • Random drug screening – a quarterly random list is generated by a consortium. DOT and Non-DOT employees are screened at the job site, shop or office, DOT employees are also breath alcohol screened
  • Fire extinguisher checks – all employees who are assigned to a company vehicle are required to conduct a monthly check on the fire extinguisher in their vehicles the safety director will check all the facility extinguishers
  • Eye wash / drench stations – a check of the stations for accessibility, cleanliness and functionality
  • First aid kits – refresh supplies in the kits
  • Chain and sling inspections – inspection for wear, stretching, deflection and abuse
  • Gas detector calibration – monthly controlled gas calibration
  • Safety committee – state certified safety committee that meets once a month, more often if necessary, it is the committees duty to review, update and administer the company’s safety program
  • Job site safety meetings – on site safety meetings addressing hazards related directly to that job
  • Maintenance shop meetings – in shop meetings with the mechanics addressing both shop and field related safety hazards
  • Drivers meetings – covering DOT issues, and safety related concerns with over the trucks
  • Field inspections by the insurance carrier – loss control agent for the carrier will inspect the job sites

Weekly

  • Tool box talks – conducted by the job superintendent these meeting are brief and address a hazard or condition the crew will encounter that week on the job site
  • Job site inspections – conducted by the safety director using the hazard evaluation form

Training

  • New employee safety orientation – review of the company’s safety policy’s including an overview of the OSHA regulations that pertain to the job process
  • Tool box talks
  • Monthly safety meetings
  • Annual safety meetings
  • Competent person program – in house training program that includes but is not limited to the OSHA 10 hr. outreach training course, MSHA contractor training, ARC standard first aid, in depth study of the OSHA regulations that pertain to the job or work process
  • Equipment certification – training on a given piece of equipment which includes a pre-start inspection, controls and monitoring systems and daily maintenance requirements
  • Pennsylvania One Call system – seminars conducted by that organization
  • Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association – seminars and resource information
  • American Subcontractors Association – seminars and resource information
  • MSHA – training as per MSHA requirements that is necessary in order perform work at a surface mine
  • DOT – hazard material training necessary in order to transport those types of materials (diesel fuel, explosives, etc.)
